A brief review of nutritional studies for Penaeus monodon ArchiMer
Liao, I; Liu, F.
In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

A continuous model of biomass size spectra governed by predation and the effects of fishing on them ArchiMer
Benoit, Eric; Rochet, Marie-joelle.
A new time-dependent continuous model of biomass size spectra is developed. In this model, predation is the single process governing the energy flow in the ecosystem, as it causes both growth and mortality. The ratio of predator to prey is assumed to be distributed: predators may feed on a range of prey sizes. Under these assumptions, it is shown that linear size spectra are stationary solutions of the model. Exploited fish communities are simulated by adding fishing mortality to the model: it is found that realistic fishing should affect the curvature and stability of the size spectrum rather than its slope.

A Dynamic CGE Model: An Application of R&D- Based Endogenous Growth Model Theory AgEcon
Diao, Xinshen; Elbasha, Elamin H.; Roe, Terry L.; Yeldan, A. Erinc.
An R&D based endogenous growth - applied general equilibrium model is developed from an underlying analytical model which combines Romer's capital variety with Grossman and Helpman's multi-sector open economy model. The transitional dynamics of the analytical model are derived. For numerical implementation, a time discrete empirical model, with an Armington structure, is fit to East Asian data of the social accounting matrix variety. Simulations of trade reform are performed and their static and dynamic effects compared. The transition paths of the state variables are found to have a half-life of five to six periods. A solution of the Social Planner's problem, and interventions which seek to obtain this outcome from the decentralized model are also...

A generalized nonlinear tempeature response function for some growth and developmental parameters in kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C. F. Liang & A. R. Ferguson) Ciência Rural
Streck,Nereu Augusto.
Temperature is a major factor that affects metabolic processes in living organisms. Thermal time has been widely used to account for the effects of temperature on crop growth and development. However, the thermal time approach has been criticized because it assumes a linear relationship between the rate of crop growth or development and temperature. The response of the rate of crop growth and development to temperature is nonlinear. The objective of this study was to develop a generalized nonlinear temperature response function for some growth and developmental parameters in kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C. F. Liang & A. R. Ferguson). The nonlinear function has three coefficients (the cardinal temperatures), which were 0ºC, 25ºC, and...

Sukardi, Purnama; Hana, Hana; Prayogo, Norman Arie; sulistyo, Isdy; Soedibya, Petrus Hary Tjahja; Harisam, Taufan; Winanto, Tjahyo.
The effects of microcapsule diet as co-feeding for early weaning phase of gourami larvae where evaluated in terms of ingestion rate of microcapsule, growth, and survival rate. The availability of tubifex worms as natural food is uncertain and can introduce pathogens to fish culture from outside environment. Therefore, the attempt to replace or substitute this natural food continues in order to reduce the level of dependence. This research used Complete Randomized Designed (CRD) with four treatments based on a different protocol feeding management. Gourami larvae should be started with the co-feeding on day 12 until day 17 and they are more receptive to microcapsule diets after day 17. The ingestion rate of microcapsule which consumed by the larvae during...

A mathematical model for growth in weight of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) (Heptapteridae, Siluriformes, Teleostei) Ciência Rural
Benaduce,Ana Paula da Silva; Rodrigues,Luiz Alberto Díaz; Mistro,Diomar Cristina; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The use of a mathematical model applied to biological science helps to predict the specific data. Based on biological data (weight and age) of silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen, a mathematical model was elaborated based on a nonlinear difference equation to demonstrate the relationship between age and growth in weight. Silver catfish growth was described following the Beverton-Holt model Pt+1 = (r Pt) / (1+ a Pt ), where r > 0 is the maximum growth rate and a > 0 is a constant of growth inhibition. The solution of this equation is Pt= 1 /{[1/P0 - a / (r-1)] 1/r t + a/ (r-1)}, were P0 is the initial weight of the fish. Through this model it was observed that the female reaches the theoretical maximum weight approximately at the age of 18 years and the...

A Novel Polymorphism of VLDLR Signal Peptide Coding Region and Its Association with Growth and Abdominal Fat Traits of Gaoyou Domestic Ducks Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Ming-liang,C; Cong,W; Xuan,D; Lu,L; Tang-jie,Z.
ABSTRACT The VLDLR gene plays important roles in the growth and adiposity in humans and mice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between VLDLR gene genetic polymorphisms and growth and abdominal fat traits of the Gaoyou domestic duck. A total of 267 Gaoyou ducks were employed for testing. A 18bp deletion was identified in VLDLR signal peptide coding region. The results of c2 test suggested that the genotype frequencies of VLDLR signal peptide coding region were not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Least squares analysis showed that body weight (BW) of -18bp/-18bp genotype ducks was significantly higher than those of other genotypes from six (BW6) (p<0.05) to ten weeks of age (BW10) (p<0.01). The association analysis was...

A Politico-Economic Model of Aging, Technology Adoption and Growth AgEcon
Lancia, Francesco; Prarolo, Giovanni.
Over the past century, all OECD countries have been characterized by a dramatic increase in economic conditions, life expectancy and educational attainment. This paper provides a positive theory that explains how an economy might evolve when the longevity of its citizens both influences and is influenced by the process of economic development. We propose a three periods OLG model where agents, during their lifetime, cover different economic roles characterized by different incentive schemes and time horizon. Agents’ decisions embrace two dimensions: the private choice about education and the public one upon innovation policy. The theory focuses on the crucial role played by heterogeneous interests in determining innovation policies, which are one of the...

A polygenic hypothesis for sex determination in the European sea bass - Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Dupont Nivet, M; Chavanne, H; Chatain, Beatrice.
Polygenic sex determination, although suspected in several species, is thought to be evolutionarily unstable and has been proven in very few cases. In the European sea bass, temperature is known to influence the sex ratio. We set up a factorial mating, producing 5.893 individuals from 253 full-sib families, all reared in a single batch to avoid any between-families environmental effects. The proportion of females in the offspring was 18.3%, with a large variation between families. Interpreting sex as a threshold trait, the heritability estimate was 0.62 +/- 0.12. The observed distribution of family sex ratios was in accordance with a polygenic model or with a four-sex-factors system with environmental variance and could not be explained by any genetic...

A preliminary investigation of age and growth of Otolithes ruber from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa OceanDocs
Fennessy, S.T.; Brash, J.M..
This study investigated age and growth of Otolithes ruber, found in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The specimens were collected from prawn trawlers that operate off the shallow water Tugela Bank and from a recreational boat fishery in Durban. Estimates of age and growth parameters were based on the examination of sectioned sagittal otoliths. There was difficulty in estimating growth parameters for separate sexes because the small fish were not sexed and the numbers of males was low. Periodicity of growth zone formation was assumed to be annual although periodicity of growth zone deposition could not be established by marginal zone analysis. The von Bertalanffy growth curve was used to describe the combined male and female growth of O. ruber: Lt = 419mm TL...

Abatement Technology and the Environment-Growth Nexus with Education AgEcon
Pautrel, Xavier.
This article challenges the conventional result that a tighter environmental tax has no long-run effect on human capital accumulation in the presence of pollution arising from final output production. It demonstrates that the technology used in the abatement sector determines the existence and the direction of the growth-effect. A tighter environmental tax rises (respectively reduces) human capital accumulation in the presence of pollution arising from final production, if the abatement sector is relatively more intensive in human (resp. physical) capital than final sector. That result always holds for finite lifetime but for infinite lifetime it only holds when labor supply is endogenous. The transitional impact of a tighter environmental policy is also...

Adequate timing for heart-of-palm harvesting in King palm Horticultura Brasileira
Bovi,Marilene L.A.; Saes,Luiz Alberto; Uzzo,Roberta Pierry; Spiering,Sandra H..
Heart-of-palm, palm heart, or "palmito" can be considered as a non-conventional vegetable, largely consumed in Brazil and exported to more than sixty countries. Timing of heart-of-palm harvesting is a critical issue in palmito agribusiness, since it affects yield, quality and costs. A three-year field experiment was utilized to identify the correct timing for king palm heart-of-palm harvesting, from the standpoint of maximizing yield and minimizing growing period. The experimental site was located at Pariqueraçu, Vale do Ribeira, a region where palmito agribusiness has increased recently, due to adequate climatic conditions, low costs and high industry demand. Crop was grown in 2 x 0.75 m spacing, utilizing six-month old seedlings. Growth was assessed...

Robert, Stephane; Goulletquer, Philippe; Soletchnik, Patrick; Geairon, Philippe; Le Moine, Olivier; Razet, Daniel; Faury, Nicole; Taillade, Sylvie.
Within its oyster quality project, the Marennes-Oleron Professional Organization (SRC) aims to improve the zootechnic rearing conditions in ponds for the Pacific cupped oyster C. gigas "fines de claires" and "speciales de claires", presently specified by the French norm AFNOR NF V45-056 (AFNOR, 1985). The proposed modifications concern a seasonal management of the oyster biomass per m2 , using 1 and 3kg/m2, during 2 weeks from April 1rst to October 31, and 3 weeks from November 1 to March 31, respectively. The Shellfish Aquaculture Laboratory of Poitou-Charentes (LCPC) carried out experiments to address the professional and decision-makers request for an assessment of those modifications on the final oyster quality compared to the current rearing...

Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix), (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil Zoologia
Ambrósio,Ângela Maria; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Agostinho,Ângelo Antônio.
Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) was determined. Data were collected from December 1983 to November 1984 and from April 1997 to March 1998 in the Itaipu Reservoir. To evaluate reading consistency, it was analyzed the coefficient of variation of the total length for each annulus observed in the otoliths. Through marginal increment analysis, it was determined that the annuli formed annually (April) indicating that otoliths may be used in the study of age and growth of the species. Food supply was considered the main factor affecting growth and annuli formation in both periods. Back-calculated data were used to assess if the Rosa Lee phenomenon, commom in selective samples like commercial fishing, occured....

Age and growth of Pimelodella pappenheimi (siluriformes, pimelodidae) from an Atlantic Forest Stream in Southern Brazil BABT
Amaral,Marina Faria do; Aranha,José Marcelo Rocha; Menezes,Márcia Santos de.
Studies were performed to determine the growth curves in length and weight for Pimelodella pappenheimi in the "das Pombas" stream, a coastal stream susceptible to the flash flood phenomenon. Samples were collected from September-95 to February-97, monthly, using electric fishing. The fishes were measured in total length and weight. A total of 156 pairs of otholits were taken for ring reading. The Ford-Walford transformation allowed the use of von Bertallanffy expression. The pale ring formation was annual, and it occurred between the summer and the autumn. This species grews in length according to Lt=15.86 (1-e-0.57(t+0.1551) ) equation and in weight according to Wt= 24.23 (1-e-0.57(t+0.1551) )3.12. Age and Growth of the lemon sole (Microstomus kitt) in the Celtic Sea and the North Sea ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Elleboode, Romain; Persohn, Cecile; Dufour, Jean-louis.
Age and growth of lemon sole (Microstomus kitt) were determined from 115 specimens collected in the Celtic Sea and in the North Sea in 2006 and 2007. Total length is ranged from 11 to 44 cm, while total weight varied between 12 and 1040 g. Age estimation was based on otoliths readings. The oldest male and female were estimated to be 9 years old. The length–weight relationships parameters for lemon sole in the Celtic Sea and in the North Sea were W=0.0043*TL3.2860 and W=0.0062*TL3.1505 respectively. Weight including both sexes increased with positive allometric growth. The von Bertalanffy growth equation in the North Sea was fitted on the basis of mean length-at-age data resulting in parameters values of TL∞ = 36.44 cm (S.E. = 0.484), K = 0.187 /y (S.E. =...
